England: HM Treasury Department Sanctions
All member states of the United Nations (UN) are required to adhere to UN policy and apply any directive or sanction dictated by the UN Security Council. Her Majesty’s (HM) Sanctions list is aimed at persons or entities identified by the UN Security Council as contributing to a threat to, or breach of, international peace and security.
- Measures require UN Member States to:
- Freeze the funds, assets or resources in member countries that are owned/controlled by sanctioned designees
- Ensure that funds, assets or resources are prevented from being made available to the sanctioned designees by anyone in that country
- Prevent sanctioned designees from entering or traveling through the member country
- Typical sanctioned goods/services are:
- Military related items
- Nuclear, chemical or biological weapons programs
- Training, advice and any services related to military activities, rough diamonds, Iraqi property seized since 1990
- The Asset Freezing Unit in HM Treasury is responsible for administration of financial sanctions in effect in the UK
